INFORME PROJECTE MOSAICS DE VIDA 2024 – 2025

CONNECT CONSERVE COLLABORATE

Thanks to a grant from the Provincial Council of Tarragona for non-profit entities for the development of environmental protection and improvement projects 2024, of 13,492.45 euros, we have been able to carry out the following projects in La Mola d'en Beset - dry stone, art and nature, forest pasture, habitats for birds and bats, natural badgers and the restoration of La font de Cassanyes.

DRYSTONE

Workshops to promote and protect this traditional construction technique declared intangible heritage by UNESCO.

One workshop, in English and Catalan and aimed specifically at women, stood out for fostering cultural exchange between the Catalan and Moroccan communities. The initiative has offered the opportunity to learn how to repair the drystone walls and structures that abound the territory.

They have also promoted sustainability, inclusion, female empowerment, and social cohesion.

BIODIVERSITY REFUGES BATS

La Mola d’en Beset has seen a significant decline in its bat population—an essential species for maintaining ecosystem balance. To encourage their return, two specific bat shelters have been installed, along with ten nest boxes for parids, small insectivorous birds that play a key role in natural pest control in forests.

In collaboration with GEPEC-EdC, a nest box building workshop was also held. The activity resulted in ten additional boxes, which were distributed among participants committed to installing them on their own properties.

This project promotes ecological land management and encourages active citizen involvement. It connects people with their environment, turning biodiversity into a shared, familiar, and locally protected value.

PONDS

At La Mola d’en Beset, we have created three natural ponds as part of our forest management plan. These small water bodies are designed to retain rainwater and support its infiltration into the soil, helping to preserve moisture and prevent erosion. Over time, they will become habitats that promote biodiversity, creating new spaces for local flora and fauna.

La Mola is an open space for everyone, and perhaps one day these ponds will be a great spot for birdwatching or simply enjoying nature.

LA FONT DE CASSANYES

At La Font de Cassanyes, we have begun a restoration project to recover this unique and magical spring. While preparing to restore the original stone tunnels and air vents, we have discovered a far more complex system that had collapsed over time

So far we have cleared the vegetation that was blocking access and visibility. Next year, we will begin the second phase, focused on restoring the structure and reviving the water flow.

Our aim is to create a visitable, enchanting space where people can reconnect with nature. Places where water emerges from the earth hold a special kind of magic — and we want to protect it and share it with everyone.

Project carried out with a grant from the Diputació de Tarragona in the amount of 1000 €

WALKING AS AN ARTISITIC PRACTICE

This workshop explores walking as a creative and mindful practice that deepens connection with the natural environment. Participants move through the landscape with attention and openness, observing their surroundings, collecting small found objects, and using these materials to create an artwork that dialogues with the space.
In a special session, the workshop was adapted for a group of Ukrainian soldiers recovering from war injuries who were unable to walk.
Seated under a tree, they engaged with the landscape through drawing, establishing an emotional link to their homeland and building an artistic bridge that transcended their situation.
The experience encourages a conscious relationship with nature, fosters imagination, and transforms walking into a reflective, aesthetic, and participatory artistic process.

SILVOPASTURE WITH CATALAN DONKEYS

To restore the Mediterranean mosaic landscape and improve water flow at the Font de Cassanyes, an open space was created using silvopasture. The triple goal: reduce competing vegetation, recover open space, and help prevent forest fires.

Volunteers—WWOOFers and visitors—helped install 1.5 km of electric fencing, and for two months, three Catalan donkeys—an endangered native breed—grazed the site.

This project strengthens sustainable land management, raises awareness of mosaic landscapes, and promotes biodiversity, fire prevention, and the value of native breeds.
